An August 2005 letter to family, freinds and church

Our Summer of Love
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Elizabeth and I are extremely thankful that we are part of the family of God. What a journey we have been on! Many times we have been rocked to our knees, but we know without a doubt Who to turn to for strength.

Psalm 46 vs 1 reads “God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble”.

Mathew 11:28 reads “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”.

2 Corinthians 12:9a reads “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.”

We thank God for all who have been a part of our journey by supporting us in prayer, financially, by visiting, staying with me at the hospital, by providing food, assistance with the kids and also to those who helped maintain our home. We believe that this is God’s grace extended thru followers of Him. The support we have received is overwhelming and has come from people we know and from people who barely know us or do not know us at all. We are very grateful. What a privilege to be part of God’s family!

Ecclesiastes 4:9a, 10 reads “Two are better than one, if one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up.

Just a brief summary of our journey.

As many of you know my wife Elizabeth’s journey started May 12 on her 40th birthday. Earlier that week she had experienced flu like symptoms. Most of May 12 was spent in the emergency clinic at Grand River hospital where what was first thought to be 2 separate issues, the flu and a blood clot, escalated to the point that X-rays showed Elizabeth had an infection. In short it escalated to a low grade of flesh eating disease, to Scott being told after her surgery early morning May 13 that it was life threatening, to Scott being told at approximately 9am that it was the highest grade of the disease, to Scott being informed later that morning on May 13 that Elizabeth had gone into cardiac arrest due to septic shock, which is a result of infection in the blood stream.

James 1 vs 2 to 4 reads “Consider it pure joy my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

John 14:14 reads “You may ask for anything in my name, and I will do it.

For the 2 plus weeks following, God extended his grace to us by carrying us thru multiple surgeries in order to remove infection, thru concerns regarding major organs, to a point on May 27 where things began to slowly improve. We praise God that Elizabeth’s condition continued to improve and he being the great physician has chosen to work miraculously in her health. God has overseen Elizabeth being transferred from ICU to the surgical recovery floor on June 13 to being released from Grand river hospital on July 6. Elizabeth is now at home continuing her rehabilitation. She goes for a very gruelling physiotherapy session 3 times a week that at this point consists mainly of working on her left leg mobility, and by September we hope will progress to overall body strengthening. The rehabilitation will be a lengthy process and is not without its challenges but we know who is our strength and our guide.

1 Peter 1:3-9 reads “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith – of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

We would value your continued prayers for the following;

  • Elizabeth’s continued rehabilitation
  • Our immediate family as we find the new norm for our lives
  • Scott’s return to work
  • For extended family who have been very involved in supporting us as they transition slowly to normalcy in their lives
We sign off by saying that God has richly blessed us by granting us 2 beautiful children, by working so many miracles in Elizabeth’s health and by surrounding us with so many loving people. Thanks for supporting us in this summer of love. We do feel very loved. May we all choose to be good stewards of what God has given us, which is all that we possess.

To all may God bless you for serving him.

Love in Christ,

The Ruppert's
